A study for an unbuilt version of the Baltimore Visitors Center, which was completed in a different version in 2004. I was working on the Maryland Zoo at the time and was in my “wood phase” when I did a quick weekend design study for the BVC while at Design Collective, Inc. The original design was done literally in actual model form, but I had never documented/explored the design in SketchUp until recently.
The building has a clearly articulated “X” shaped timber structural system (alluding to the tall ship structures in the Harbor) supporting a “V” shaped roof. The central section is an all-glass two story exhibit pavilion flanked on either side by one story support functions (restrooms/building systems/gift shop) and is topped by four mast-like columns.
The design of the completed building (by DCI) is very successful, but this is still one of my personal favorite “might-have-beens”………..
